Why Tailgate Vans Have Always Been Difficult for Bike Storage

And Why We Spent 6 Months Trying to Solve It


The Hatchback Problem Nobody Talks About

For years, Bike-Hook has worked incredibly well on rear-door vans.

The reason is actually pretty simple:

  • open the rear doors
  • place the Bike-Hook onto the exposed door jamb
  • close the doors
  • the system locks securely into place

That simple loading process is one of the biggest reasons Bike-Hook became popular with campervan owners.

It’s lightweight.
Compact.
Easy to use.

But there was one problem we kept running into:

hatchbacks and lift gates.


Why Tailgate Vans Are So Difficult

At first glance, hatchbacks seem like they should be easier.

But from an engineering standpoint, they create a completely different problem.

With a rear-door van:

  • the door jamb is exposed when open
  • the Bike-Hook can be placed directly onto the door
  • closing the doors locks the system into place

A tailgate or hatchback changes everything.

The challenge is this:

When the hatch is open, you can’t properly load a traditional Bike-Hook system.

But when the hatch is closed…
you can’t access the mounting area anymore.

That creates a frustrating problem that many traditional bike rack systems solve by becoming:

  • larger
  • heavier
  • more complicated

Usually involving:

  • oversized tray systems
  • giant hitch racks
  • complicated straps
  • swing-away assemblies
  • bulky hardware

We didn’t want to go that direction.


The Goal Was Never to Build a Giant Rack

Over the last 6 months, we’ve been testing one simple idea:

Could we keep the same lightweight Bike-Hook philosophy… while making it work on hatchbacks and lift gates?

That became the challenge.

We wanted something that:

  • stayed compact
  • remained lightweight
  • worked with smaller vehicles
  • avoided giant rack systems
  • still felt simple to use

And honestly…
it took a lot longer than expected.


The Breakthrough: Splitting the System Into Two Pieces

The solution ended up being surprisingly simple.

Instead of trying to force the entire Bike-Hook onto a hatchback, the system was separated into:

two modular components.


Part 1: The Tailgate Mount

The first piece is a compact Bike-Hook mounting base.

This small handheld mount attaches to the hatch or lift gate while the rear door is open.

Once mounted:

  • the hatch closes normally
  • the mounting base stays secured in place
  • the vehicle remains compact and clean

Part 2: The Fork-Mount Section

The second piece attaches directly to the bicycle fork.

Instead of permanently hanging on the vehicle, this section:

  • slides
  • locks
  • and plugs directly into the mounted tailgate base

This allows bikes to be:

  • mounted
  • removed
  • swapped

…while the hatch remains closed.

That was the breakthrough.


Why This Changes Everything

This new system opens the door to vehicles that traditional rear-door Bike-Hook systems couldn’t support before.

Including:

  • hatchback vans
  • SUVs
  • crossovers
  • compact adventure vehicles
  • lift-gate campers

And because the mounting system can be used in multiple orientations, bikes can be positioned:

  • hanging downward behind the vehicle
    OR
  • with the rear tire positioned over the roofline

This flexibility helps solve:

  • parking concerns
  • vehicle width issues
  • hatch clearance challenges
  • compact travel limitations

Smaller Vehicles Need Smaller Solutions

One of the biggest trends in 2026 is the growth of:

  • compact campers
  • smaller vans
  • adventure crossovers
  • lightweight travel setups

People are moving away from:

  • oversized accessories
  • giant hitch systems
  • complicated loading setups

And toward:

simpler modular systems that stay out of the way.

That’s exactly what this new project was designed around.

The first prototype production run is currently being built and tested.

Like every Bike-Hook product, the goal is real-world functionality:

  • easy loading
  • lightweight travel
  • simple operation
  • compact storage

Not unnecessary complexity.

Sometimes the hardest engineering challenges come from trying to keep things simple.

For the last 6 months, we’ve been working on a way to bring the lightweight Bike-Hook philosophy to hatchbacks, lift gates, SUVs, and crossovers without creating another oversized rack system.
