Bike-Hook and eBikes: Questions Answered About Weight, Safety, and Fit

We get the question a lot:
"Can Bike-Hook safely carry my eBike?"
From weight limits to battery removal, hub fitment, and tie-down tips — this post answers the most common questions we get about using Bike-Hook with electric bikes.

Let’s break it down.

What is the weight rating for Bike-Hook? Will it damage my van doors?

This is by far the most asked question. We tested the original Bike-Hook prototype with 80 lb of weight (hanging from the door) for several days and recorded no deflection in door gaps or hinge alignment. That same unit has now logged over 40,000 miles carrying two eBikes and is still going strong.

Also: think about the setups we’ve all seen on campervans—spare tires, storage boxes, ladders—some of them holding a full person. These are mounted the same way, and often weigh far more than a single eBike.

Pro tip: If possible, remove the eBike battery before mounting. That alone can save 5–10 lbs and reduce stress on the door.

Are eBikes safe on Bike-Hooks?

Yes—when mounted properly, eBikes are just as secure as any other bike. Our fork mount system uses a customizable “hub block” to match your bike’s front axle or dropout system.

Most eBikes use standard quick-release or thru-axle hubs. If you’re not sure, just remove the front wheel, measure the fork spacing in millimeters, and compare that to the specs on the Bike-Hook product page.

If your axle system is unusual (some Chinese eBikes are), we’ll help you match the right hub block or build you a custom adapter.

Do I need to tie down my eBike while driving?

If installed properly, your bike won’t sway—but adding a strap is always a good idea, especially on long or off-road trips.

We suggest using a strap that wraps across the top of your rear doors and down to the seat post. This method helps:

  • Pull the bike closer to the van

  • Lift some of the load off the hook

  • Add stability in wind or rough terrain

I’ve personally logged over 50,000 miles on my test bikes—many of which weren’t strapped at all—so it’s really a matter of preference and road conditions.

Will Bike-Hook attach to my specific eBike?

Most likely, yes. Our standard mounting kit fits most modern bikes, including:

  • Quick release (5mm x 100mm)

  • Thru-axles (12x100, 15x100, 15x110)

  • Some fat bikes and downhill setups with a custom block

Not sure?
→ Just take off your front wheel, measure the inside fork spacing in millimeters, and send it to us.
→ We’ll match it up or build a custom fit.
