3 Front Fork Mount Types Explained — and How Bike-Hook Fits Your Van Bike Rack Needs

Understanding Front Fork Mounting Types and How They Work with Bike-Hook
There are three basic mechanical ways your front wheel attaches to your bicycle’s front fork. In this blog, we’ll walk through each method and show how they integrate with our Bike-Hook system and the mounting hub block included with every order. We’ll also cover easy upgrade options in case your bike or van setup needs a custom fit.
Whether you’re traveling cross-country in a Sprinter campervan, converting a Ford Transit van, or living the #VanLife in a RAM Promaster, Bike-Hook offers a compact, secure, and budget-friendly interior van bike mount solution. Let’s explore how our van bike racks work with each front fork mounting system.
1. Threaded Rod and Nuts (Old School Mounting)
This classic method—still found on many entry-level and some electric bikes from China—involves a long threaded axle and screw-on nuts. You simply loosen both sides to remove the front wheel.
In most cases, our Bike-Hook mounting block accommodates this type using the 5mm x 100mm quick release setup. Insert the 5mm quick release adapters into the block, run the skewer through with the springs facing inward, mount the fork, tighten the thumb nut, and lock the cam into place. Adjust as needed for a snug fit.
If your axle is wider or doesn’t feel secure, no worries—we offer alternative mounting blocks to ensure a proper and safe fit for your bicycle storage for vans.

2. Quick Release Skewer (Most Common Type)
This is the most widely used system for modern bicycles, except high-end mountain bikes. Simply unlock the thumb cam, slide out the wheel, and place the fork onto the Bike-Hook. Our standard hub block covers most mainstream bikes with:
-
5mm x 100mm quick release
-
12mm x 100mm thru-axle
-
15mm x 100mm thru-axle
-
15mm x 110mm thru-axle
We’ve designed our space-saving bike storage racks to be versatile and compatible with bikes used in bike racks for Sprinter vans, bike racks for Transit vans, and bike racks for campervans of all types.

3. Thru-Axle (Modern and Strongest Option)
This popular option for high-performance and fat tire bikes involves a solid aluminum axle that threads through the fork. Sizes vary from 10mm to 20mm, with wider ones like 15mm x 150mm found on fat bikes.
Our no-drill bike racks support many thru-axles, but for oversized models, we recommend our KUAT Dirtbag mounts or custom-fit blocks. We’ve even created setups for downhill race bikes with 20mm thru-axles. These custom Bike-Hooks are part of our van life bike accessories collection, made for riders with unique needs.

Need a Custom Fit?
With so many e-bikes, mountain bikes, and specialty bikes entering the market, you might need a custom solution. Just measure the distance between your forks (typically 100mm for standard bikes), and we’ll guide you from there. Custom mount swaps typically cost around $20—just message us for exact pricing.
Our hooks are made of powder-coated galvanneal steel, with aluminum and stainless hardware, ensuring long-lasting durability in any weather. We keep your bike transportation for vans safe and budget-friendly.
