Bike Storage Options for RVs (Without Using a Hitch)

For RV owners who travel with bikes, finding the right storage solution is rarely simple. Hitch-mounted racks are everywhere — but they’re not always the best fit for every RV or every trip.

Over the years, we’ve talked with cyclists and travelers who want a clean, simple way to carry 2–3 bikes without adding length to their rig, blocking rear access, or dealing with heavy hitch systems.

So let’s break down the common RV bike storage options — and where the gaps still exist.

The Common RV Bike Rack Options

🚗 Hitch-Mounted Bike Racks

Hitch racks are the most popular option, but they come with tradeoffs:

  • Add length to the RV

  • Can block rear doors or storage access

  • Heavy and bulky

  • Not ideal for tight campsites or ferry travel

They work — but they’re not for everyone.

🪜 Ladder-Mounted Bike Racks

Many RVs already have rear ladders, which makes ladder mounting an appealing idea.

However, most ladder racks on the market:

  • Are bulky or awkward

  • Look overbuilt for 2 bikes

  • Can wobble or stress the ladder

  • Aren’t designed with modern bikes in mind

For riders who want something simpler, the current options often miss the mark.

🏠 Interior Storage

Storing bikes inside an RV keeps them protected, but:

  • Takes up valuable living space

  • Can be messy or inconvenient

  • Requires lifting bikes in and out

This works for some trips — not all.

The Missing Middle: Simple, Clean, Ladder-Mounted Bike Storage

What we hear most often is this:

“I don’t want a hitch rack.
I don’t want a massive system.
I just want a clean, simple way to carry a couple bikes.”

That’s where the idea of a lightweight, ladder-mounted bike rack starts to make sense — especially for RV owners who:

  • Travel with 2–3 bikes

  • Want to keep the rear of their RV compact

  • Prefer simple, minimal gear

  • Don’t want another hitch-based solution

An Idea We’re Exploring (Not a Product Announcement)

We’re currently exploring the idea of a simple bike mount that attaches directly to an RV ladder.

The goal would be:

  • No hitch required

  • Clean, minimal design

  • Secure storage for 2–3 bicycles

  • Compatible with common RV ladder styles

  • Built for travel — not bulk

This is still in the idea and design phase. Nothing is being sold or launched yet.

Why We’re Asking Now

Winter is planning season for many RV owners. It’s when ideas are explored, setups are refined, and gear decisions are made ahead of spring travel.

If there’s enough interest, we’ll take the next step.
If not, we’ll keep listening.

Either way — your feedback helps shape what gets built next.
